WRAP-EM Releases Updated Just-In-Time Clinical Guidance for Pediatric Respiratory Illness

January 2026 | Oakland, CA

The Western Regional Alliance for Pediatric Emergency Management (WRAP-EM) has released Just-In-Time Clinical Guidance for Pediatric Respiratory Illness, Version 2 (January 2026), now available through the WRAP-EM online Resource Library at wrap-em.org.

This updated guidance is designed to support emergency departments and non-pediatric clinicians caring for children with respiratory illness during periods of pediatric surge, limited specialty access, or while awaiting transfer to higher levels of care. The document serves as a concise, evidence-based reference to assist with rapid clinical decision-making in time-sensitive settings.

Version 2 includes updated pediatric respiratory assessment and management algorithms, clinical guidance on oxygenation and ventilatory support (including high-flow nasal cannula use), medication considerations, and practical appendices such as severity scoring tools and pocket medication references. Content reflects current evidence and expert consensus from pediatric emergency medicine, critical care, pharmacy, and emergency management leaders across multiple states.

This resource was developed with support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) and aligns with WRAP-EM’s mission to enhance regional readiness for pediatric emergencies by providing practical, accessible tools for frontline clinicians. Partners, healthcare organizations, and emergency management agencies are encouraged to access and share this resource through the WRAP-EM Resource Library.
